KIP Protocol Wins Chainlink Hackathon Prize for World’s First Decentralised RAG Implementation
We are proud to be the recipient of the Tencent Cloud Prize at the prestigious 2023 Chainlink Hackathon for our demonstration of the first-ever decentralised Retriever-Augmented Generation (RAG) execution on-chain.
The highly competitive hackathon saw over 18,000 participants from all over the world, where KIP Protocol stands among the selected 20 winners, underscoring the novelty of our solution and our commitment to decentralised AI innovation.
Overcoming AI’s Monopoly
The inspiration behind our solution is predicated upon the dangers of AI monopoly, one that seeks to subsume and control all levers of the AI ecosystem. This exploitative behaviour by Big Tech ultimately prevents participants in an AI ecosystem from owning and monetising their Knowledge Assets – be it models, data or apps.
We believe that the best way to counter this growing threat is to decentralise AI. In order to demonstrate how this approach will work in a real-world scenario, we invented an innovative method – decentralised RAG (d/RAG).
Our Novel Solution
By decentralising RAG, we are able to facilitate collaboration among otherwise independent entities – data owners, model owners, and app owners – without introducing high latency in interactions between different parties. And by bringing this framework on-chain, each party is able to transparently account for contribution under a pay-per-query revenue model.
During the hackathon, we demonstrated a dynamic framework of the creation, ownership, and monetisation of Knowledge Assets. Our solution highlighted two key components:
- The seamless creation of on-chain Knowledge Assets; and
- Their subsequent monetisation through a pay-per-query model.
In this particular implementation, Knowledge Assets are created and represented through Ethereum ERC-1155 NFTs. Monetisation comes from a revenue-sharing model where AI applications (like decentralised chatbots) use a pay-per-query system, benefitting both creators and owners.
To manage AI’s resource-intensive nature and enhance efficiency, the system uses a dual-chain approach and Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) to synchronise transactions across different chains, ensuring low transaction costs and effective value transfer.
Through this novel solution, we were able to successfully:
- Develop a framework for users to create, manage and monetise Knowledge Assets on-chain,
- Implement a decentralised pay-per-query model,
- Pioneer a new method in AI data usage with Query & Answer NFTs for real-life applications, and
- Establish a multi-chain framework for NFT ownership, trading, and AI interactions.
KIP Protocol’s approach of implementing RAG in a decentralised manner is an ambitious undertaking that requires a multifaceted approach, combining advanced technologies from distributed computing, blockchain, machine learning, and privacy-preserving techniques. It presents a significant opportunity for innovation in how knowledge-based systems are built and operated, potentially leading to more resilient, transparent, and equitable AI systems.
